Visit a Horse Farm

A great way to get to know about different breeds of horses is to visit horse farms. Most horse breeders love nothing more than to talk about their horses, so you should be welcome. Just be sure to call ahead and ask. Tell them you're thinking about getting a horse and trying to decide which breed would be the best for you.

You should be able to find horse farms in the yellow pages, but if not, go on line. Type in different breeds and see if there are some near you. If that doesn't work, go to the local feed stores, western wear shops, and tack stores. Usually you'll find a bulletin board with horses for sale, riding lessons, and horse trainers.

If you haven't been around horses much yet, there are a few things you should remember. First, don't approach the horses quickly. Move gently and slowly so you don't startle them or threaten them. Second, don't walk up behind a horse you don't know! And do pay attention to the horse's frame of mind. If he seems upset, don't stand too close. Most horses would not hurt you deliberately, but when they're upset they don't always look where they're going. I speak from experience when I say that it does hurt when a thousand pound animal with hard hoofs steps on your foot.

You'll want to pet the horses - who wouldn't? To do that, approach from the side and pet their necks... don't come at them head on! If you look at how a horse's eyes are positioned on its head, you'll see that they can't possibly see what's right in front of their faces... so they are easily startled by a hand suddenly appearing in their line of sight.

Rumors and stories abound about different breeds. For instance, Arabians are thought by many to be too "hot blooded" for a young rider. Nothing could be farther from the truth. A well bred Arabian who is treated well is one of the smartest, gentlest creatures on earth. However, because they are so intelligent, they won't put up with abuse. They'll get even!

Everyone has their favorite breed. And some people feel that crossbred, or "grade" horses are the best - just as some people feel that mixed breed dogs are the best. Listen to everyone, watch, and pay attention to how the horses behave. Remember each one is an individual, but there are breed traits to learn about.
